Description:
Laser skin resurfacing technology has evolved significantly
over the past 5 years. Results are quicker, downtimes are
shorter. Laser resurfacing is especially helpful for those
who suffer from acne scarring, melasma, sun damage, age spots,
and wrinkles around the mouth or the corners of the eyes.
Laser resurfacing is a popular option in the family of ablative
skin resurfacing techniques. It removes the aged or sun-damaged
skin to allow younger looking skin to grow in its place. At
MDC, we've found the best candidates for laser resurfacing
are those with:
- Fine to moderate wrinkles
- Age spots or sun spots
- Uneven skin tones
- Sun damage
- Acne or chickenpox scars
During this procedure, a laser is directed at the skin to
destroy the damaged outer layers (epidermis), while heating
the underlying skin (dermis). This stimulates the growth of
new collagen. During the healing process, new skin forms that's
smoother and tighter.
Lasers allow the doctor control over how deep the treatment
penetrates and makes it possible to precisely treat delicate
facial areas, such as those around your eyes and lips.
Prior to the procedure, your skin will be numbed using a
local anesthetic. Depending on the size of the areas being
treated, laser resurfacing can take a couple of minutes or
up to two hours. After the procedure, your skin will appear
red or pink. You may also experience:
- Mild swelling and discomfort
- Itching
- A sunburn-like sensation

after the procedure, an ointment and dressing is applied to
your skin to protect it and most patients are asked to use
a cream or ointment to keep the skin moist while it heals.
You will likely notice an immediate difference in your skin
quality and appearance, however final results are usually
seen between 6 and 12 months, as the skin continues to improve.
While results can last for years, wrinkles and expression
lines eventually recur as skin ages. A high-SPF sunscreen
is strongly recommended to protect the skin after this procedure.
Be sure to discuss the risks of this procedure with your physician
prior to treatment, can include acne flares, dermatitis, herpes
virus infection (for those with a history of cold sores),
and hyper- or hypopigmentation.
