Gastric Sleeve & VSG Surgery in Orange County
Sleeve gastrectomy is a surgical weight loss procedure in which the stomach is reduced to about 25 percent of its original size, by surgical removal of a large portion of the stomach. The remaining stomach is stapled (with surgical staples) to form a sleeve, or tube, with a banana shape. At the Center for Weight Management and Plastic Surgery our procedure permanently reduces the size of the stomach. The procedure is performed laparoscopically and is not reversible, but can be converted to other procedures.

Our top ranked, board certified surgeons perform gastric bypass surgery with a laparoscope. Sleeve gastrectomy patients experienced resolution rates for type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obstructive sleep apnea that were similar to resolution rates for other restrictive procedures such as gastric banding.
-
- The remaining stomach looks like a sleeve (or hose or tube) and holds about 15 percent as much food as the original stomach.
- The surgeon will remove the larger, rounded part of the stomach from the body. (This is the only gastric surgery in which part of the stomach is taken out of the body.)
- Unlike gastric bypass, which changes stomach openings, sleeve gastrectomy leaves the openings intact.
Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery
It may be a safer and more effective option than gastric bypass for patients with very high BMI, those with medical problems like anemia, Crohn's disease, osteoporosis, extensive prior surgeries and other complex medical conditions.
The sleeve gastrectomy, sometimes called the vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG) or laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG), is an operation in which the left side of the stomach ("greater curvature") is surgically removed. This results in a new stomach that is roughly the size and shape of a banana. Since this operation does not involve any "rerouting" or reconnecting of the intestines, it is a simpler operation than the gastric bypass or the duodenal switch.

Also known as the vertical sleeve gastrectomy, this is an operation where the stomach is stapled and divided vertically leaving a tube-like portion of stomach intact, shaped like a banana. You have a smaller stomach to fill and it is hoped you will lose weight by restricting the amount of food you eat.
- Benefits of Gastric Sleeve Surgery
- Compared to gastric banding, there is no permanent foreign body, no subcutaneous port, and no need for adjustments with a bariatric surgeon.
- Compared to laparoscopic gastric bypass, there is no re-routing of the intestines, no "dumping" and less risk of ulcers or bowel obstruction.
