Description:
Levulan Photodynamic Therapy (LPT) is a fairly new acne treatment.
Levulan PDT can be used in conjunction with FotoFacials
to significantly improve results and to treat mild to severe
acne and the appearance of acne scars.
It's been approved
since 1999 for treating sun damaged skin and we've seen it
work wonderfully in patients who have used Accutane unsuccessfully.
Treatment works by applying the photosensitizing agent, Levulan,
to the skin prior to FotoFacial/IPL treatments, which activate
it.
After a Levulan treatment, the skin will be extremely red
and slightly swollen for up to a week. Patients need to take
extra care with their skin during this time by protecting
their skin from the sun. 48-72 hours after your treatment,
the top layer of your skin will flake and peel off.
Microdermabrasion can also be used in conjunction with Levulan/FotoFacials
(also known as Levulan Photodynamic Therapy, or LPT) to enhance
results further.
While most patients see results after 1 treatment,
multiple treatments (2-4) are usually needed to clear moderate
to severe acne or reverse severe sun damage.
